My wife shared with me an article talking about painting and photography and perspective. It was something along the lines of how people take photography as “correct” in comparison to a painting, that whatever you see in a photograph is a true representation of the world.
That idea baffled me. I took a film class in middle school and one of the things we learned early on what how to do the “world crashing in on the subject” effect. By moving your position relative to the subject and change the zoom proportionately you can make the rest of the world look closer or farther. You can use this same technique to make people or buildings look larger or smaller.
But I think the really interesting takeaway is that you can’t see the true perspective. Not that there isn’t one, this isn’t a discussion about a lack of objective truth, but that we must acknowledge that even though we may get close, we will need see the exact or entire picture.
